Experimental Design Bureau Number 1, led by the legendary Sergei Korolev. OKB-1 designed the R-7, the world''s first intercontinental ballistic missile, which launched Sputnik and carried Yuri Gagarin to orbit. The bureau created the Vostok and Soyuz spacecraft, the N1 Moon rocket, and established the foundations of the Soviet space program. After Korolev''s death in 1966, the organization continued as NPO Energia and later RSC Energia, building the Energia rocket and Buran shuttle.
