North American Aviation
North American Aviation designed and built the Apollo Command and Service Module and the second stage (S-II) of the Saturn V rocket. The Apollo 1 fire in 1967 led to a complete redesign of the spacecraft under intense scrutiny, producing the Block II CSM that carried astronauts to the Moon. North American merged with Rockwell in 1967, later becoming part of Boeing, but its engineering legacy is forever tied to Apollo.
