Grumman Aerospace Corporation designed and built the Apollo Lunar Module, the first vehicle designed exclusively for operation in space. The LM had no aerodynamic surfaces, no heat shield for Earth reentry, and could not survive in an atmosphere. It was pure spacecraft, engineered to land two astronauts on the Moon and return them to lunar orbit. Six Lunar Modules successfully landed on the Moon, and a seventh -- Apollo 13''s Aquarius -- served as an emergency lifeboat, saving three astronauts'' lives.
